Diablo 4: What happens to seasonal characters after the season ends?

The second season of "Diablo 4" is coming, marking the end of the "season of viciousness" and the beginning of the "season of blood." As the season approaches, some players have questions about what will happen to the characters in Season 1.
The Seasons system has been confusing to players since the release of Diablo 4, and it will continue to do so in the future. In Season 1, players must ditch their pre-season characters and start a new one in the season realm.
But what happens to seasonal characters when one season ends and another begins?
In season two, all previous characters will be moved to the Eternal Realm. Characters created in Season 1 will be merged with pre-season characters. At the start of Season 2, you won't be able to use your previous characters. The same trend will continue in the upcoming Diablo 4 season.
You may have been hoping for an answer that doesn't require starting with new characters in season two, but I can't give you any good news on that front.
As for Eternal Realms, the Diablo 4 characters here won't be gone forever. You can still advance through the game together by completing the main story and participating in end-game content. The only difference is that these characters won't have access to most of the new content introduced in the new season. Developers can add new items and quests that can be unlocked by Eternal Realm characters, but most new content must be accessed using new Seasonal Realm characters.
New content unavailable to Eternal Realm characters includes most of the fresh Battle Pass levels, seasonal quests, and new items. However, Eternal Realm characters will continue to receive balance adjustments.
