Last Epoch Season 3: [Rampage Dragon Ballista] Shift Summon Ballista Build Guide

In this season (Season 3), I noticed that traditional Summon Ballista builds were falling behind the fast-paced meta. While I previously introduced a "Shift" variant of the Ballista build, I hadn't fully optimized it until now. After some dedicated testing, I've found this setup to be incredibly powerful.

The core of this build revolves on the "Experimental" affix on boots (Minion Teleportation/Cooldown Recovery) combined with general Cooldown Recovery (CDR) to reduce the cooldown of Shift to approximately 0.2 seconds.

Defensively, we utilize the mechanic of "Potion Health converted to Ward" (via items like Exsanguinous or Last Steps of the Living mechanics, or specifically the Experimental glove affix) to maintain a permanent Ward of 2,000–3,000+. This ensures high survivability while zipping through maps.

Gear Configuration

1. Helmet: Boneclamor Barbute

• Why: This helmet provides the base for our survival, granting Ward per second based on Necrotic Resistance, plus Intelligence and Dexterity.

• Note: In the Chinese text, this is referred to as the "Bone Swap" (Boneclamor). It is essential for the Ward sustain layer.

2. Relic: Tyrant's Skull (New S3 Item)

• Core Mechanic: This new Relic summons a Primal Tyrannosaur (T-Rex).

• Synergy: The T-Rex's "Roar" ability has a cooldown of roughly 12 seconds, which perfectly syncs with our Ballista duration. The Roar grants a massive buff, transferring 20% of the T-Rex's attributes (scaling from the Relic's stats) to our Ballistas. This provides a huge boost to damage and stats.

3. Weapon: Flight of the First (Ancient Flight)

• Localization Note: Referred to as "Back to the Water" (Last Stand) in the source.

• Stats: This bow implicitly provides Physical Resistance and Cold Resistance, helping to cap defenses.

• LP Crafting:

  • Ideally: You want Critical Strike Multiplier (replacing flat Cold Damage if possible) and Armor Penetration (T5+).

  • Alternative: A 4-LP generic bow can also work if you need to fix resistances, though you will sacrifice some damage.

4. Gloves: Julra's Obsession

• Why: Provides valuable Resistances and enables us to craft Legendary stats.

• Core Synergy: The Armor Shred applied by these gloves (or crafted onto them) is transferred to our minions, saving us from having to invest precious skill points into Shred nodes on the Ballista tree.

5. Boots: Mourningfrost

• Requirement: You must have the Experimental affix "Minions teleport around you after you use a Traversal Skill" combined with Cooldown Recovery.

• Synergy: Since we stack Dexterity for damage (Mourningfrost scales Cold Damage per Dex), these boots add significant flat damage to our attacks.

6. Ring: Heirloom of the Last Ocean (Specific S3 Item)

• Stats: Provides a massive amount of Resistance, which is often lacking in this build.

• Crafting: Aim for T7 Resistances to push your capped res well into the positives (over-capped) for defense against shred.

7. Body Armor:

• Recommendation: A high-armor Unique with 3LP (Legendary Potential).

• Stats: Look for Movement Speed and Resistances. The "Primalist" or generic high-armor bases work best here.

8. Belt:

• Affixes: Look for T7 Physical Resistance on the suffix. Physical Resistance is hard to come by, so getting it here is efficient.

Idols & Blessings

Idols:

• Setup: Similar to the "Explosive Ballista" (Zha Nu) build. Focus on Armor Shred Chance and Critical Strike Chance.

• Unique Idol: Carry one "Adorned Silver Idol" (or similar Minion variant) for the "Minion Bow Damage" or "Shared Critical Strike" modifiers.

• Resistances: Use Small Idols to patch up Physical Resistance and Cold Resistance.

Blessings:

• Timeline: The Black Sun: Grand Memory of Light (Health/Ward) or Grand Echo of Solarum (Void Res). Guide suggests Magic/Mana related.

• Timeline: Ending the Storm: Grand Knowledge of Winter (Mana) — Useful because the high attack speed drains mana quickly.

• Timeline: Reign of Dragons: Grand Resolve of Humanity (All Resistances).

• Timeline: Age of Winter: Grand Fury of the North (Physical Resistance Shred).

  • Note: Physical Shred is vital as it's hard to get elsewhere. If your Physical/Cold Resistance is too low, you can swap this for a Resistance blessing, but Shred is preferred for DPS.

• Timeline: Spirits of Fire: Grand Endurance of the Tundra (Endurance Threshold) or similar defensive nodes to boost the T-Rex synergy (if applicable).

Skill Specialization

1. Summon Ballista

• Duration: Maximize duration nodes to reach ~12 seconds (syncing with the Tyrant's Skull Roar).

• Mechanics:

  • Take the node for "Infinite Duration" (or extended) and "Repeat Cast Chance".

  • Take "Attack Speed increases after every attack".

• Note: Do not invest in Armor Shred here if you have it on your Gloves (Julra's).

2. Shift (The Engine)

• Cooldown: Key to the build. With gear CDR + Experimental Boots, this should be ~0.2s.

• Mana: Spec into Mana recovery nodes. You will be spamming this constantly.

• Defense: Spec into the Shurikens sub-node (Blade Shield) to auto-cast Shurikens for Armor buffing while shifting.

• Strategy: Use Shift constantly. Do not save it. It generates Mana and keeps your Armor stacks high.

3. Aerial Assault

• Usage: Primarily for the Intelligence Scaling (Damage) and Attack Speed buff.

• Debuff: Max out the Frailty (3 stacks) node for damage reduction on enemies.

4. Dark Quiver

• Usage: We don't self-cast this often; it's triggered or used for buffs.

• Nodes: Focus on stat boosts (Damage/Attack Speed). Ignore "Frenzy" or utility nodes that don't apply to Ballistas.

5. Falconry / Support

• Use the Falcon for extra hits and support, but the main damage comes from the Ballistas buffed by the Tyrant's Skull T-Rex.

Summary of Playstyle

1. Zoom: Spam Shift to move through the map. Your Ballistas will teleport with you (thanks to the Boots).

2. Sustain: Shift restores Mana and keeps your Armor/Ward high.

3. Burst: The Tyrant's Skull T-Rex will auto-Roar every 12 seconds. Your Ballistas (lasting 12s) will snap-shot or maintain these massive buffs.

4. Tank: With 3k+ Ward and capped Resistances (aided by the Ring and Boneclamor Helm), you can face-tank most non-one-shot mechanics.
