Diablo 4: Why reset in the new season?

The new season of Diablo 4 means a fresh start, but how is it going so far? You'll need to create a new "seasonal character" to play seasonal content, but all your hard work exploring the sanctuary and defeating demons won't be in vain. In this guide, we'll explain everything you need to know about the Diablo 4 Seasonal Reset, including the rewards and advancements that will be given to players like Standing and the Altar of Lilith.

Diablo 4 Season Reset Explained - Difference Between Eternal and Seasonal Realms
Starting with Diablo 4 Season 1, all characters are divided into Eternal Realms and Seasonal Realms. To play seasonal content and earn seasonal rewards (including the Battle Pass), you must create a new character in the Season Realm each season. New characters can skip the campaign and get the mount immediately, as long as you've completed at least one campaign on your account.

At the end of the season (and at the start of the first season), all characters are automatically transferred to the Eternal Realm. This is the regular Diablo 4 experience, with no seasonal features, stories, or access to Battle Pass rewards. Eternal Realm characters cannot play or share items with Seasonal Realm characters.
The SeasonalRealm doesn't allow you to use previously acquired gear, but there are many things that can be permanently migrated from the EternalRealm to the SeasonalRealm, such as Lilith Altars and Skins. As long as a character has logged in at least once from the start of Diablo 4 Season 1, all map progress, Lilith Altars, and reputation for that character will transfer to all current and future characters. Combined with campaign skipping, season characters level up faster and it's easier to skip to season content.
Achievements, mounts, titles, and appearances are all "account-bound". Yes, even those crappy-looking helmets you've never worn.

Why is there a season reset for Diablo 4?
According to Blizzard, Season Reset exists to allow developers to introduce interesting features without having to worry about balancing an ever-expanding feature set. It's also meant to keep players from getting overwhelmed, and to get new players on board, playing with friends who can't stop talking about how great Diablo 4 is.
This might sound crazy to someone new to Diablo 4, but Blizzard has a track record of listening to player feedback (mostly) and the seasonal mode has worked for past Diablo games very good.
